Do You Have an Enlarged Thyroid Gland?

The thyroid gland is an important part of your endocrine system that is responsible for the production of Thyroxine and triiodothyronine – the two hormones that regulate your growth, metabolism and sexual development. Patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis have immune systems that attack their own thyroid glands. The attack to the gland hinders it from producing the required amount of thyroid hormones. 2. Graves’ disease. Graves’ disease is another form of autoimmune disorder more commonly known as toxic diffuse goiter. The overproduction results to an enlargement of the thyroid gland and often leads to goiter. Graves’ disease is considered a type of hyperthyroidism.
3. Iodine deficiency. One of the key nutrients needed by your thyroid gland is iodine. It is added in the salt that we consume. Once you lack the right amount of iodine, your thyroid gland will experience over-stimulation that can lead to the formation of goiter.
4. Thyroid cancer. There are very rare cases of thyroid cancer. Also, the cause of this form of cancer is unknown up to this day. However, there are instances that the cells of your thyroid gland multiply and form lumps in your thyroid, causing it to enlarge.

The enlargement of the thyroid is the most common symptom of a thyroid disease. To make sure that you get the correct treatment, it is best to get your thyroid gland examined by a doctor.
